Beat the Winter Blues With Fun Family Activities in Buffalo, Minnesota

Family fun in Buffalo MN

Buffalo, Minnesota, offers plenty family fun with these winter activities!

The snowflakes are starting to fall, but that doesn’t mean there isn’t anything fun happening right here in Buffalo, Minnesota! Below are some local places to visit and activities the entire family can get involved in during the winter months.

Where the Buffalo Roam

If you are looking for an outside activity with a little scavenger hunt thrown in, do the Buffalo Roam! What is the Buffalo Roam? It’s a hunt to find life-size buffalo statues located throughout Buffalo.

In 2004, the Buffalo Championship Rodeo Association had businesses commission life-size buffalo statues. Each is uniquely decorated, and the herd now boasts 23 statues all over Buffalo. Take the family around downtown Buffalo and see how many of the herd you can find. Take photos with the buffalo you find, and post on social media with the hashtags #ItsBetterInBuffalo and #BuffaloRoamMN. If you want a map of all of the statue locations, stop in to the Buffalo Chamber’s office at 205 Central Avenue.

Buffalo Farmers’ Market

When you hear “farmers’ market,” you often think of a summer activity, but there are still plenty of homemade goods and produce available during the winter at the Buffalo Farmers’ Market. Check out local vendors and pick out a variety of produce, homemade delights, and handcrafted items from people located in and around Buffalo! During the winter, the market is held in the Community Center, so you don’t have to worry about walking through the elements. The market is only open on select Saturdays during the winter, so be sure to check out the website for dates and times.

Wright County Historical Society

Buffalo and Wright County have a rich history, but how much of it do you really know? Take the family down to the Wright County Historical Society to learn about the town and county’s past. Current exhibits at the historical society include the Nelsonian (a 32-piece one-person band), Hubert Humphrey’s snowmobile, and many more pieces of local history in the main gallery. The reference library at the Wright County Historical Society also boasts a large collection of genealogy research programs and newspaper clippings on microfilm to research and read about Buffalo and Wright County’s past. If you and your family love history, this is a great place to explore on a snowy, chilly winter day.

Festival of Trees

If you are looking for a holiday-related activity, check out the Festival of Trees at the Wright County Historical Society. From December 1, 2022, through January 7, 2023, you can explore Minnesota’s largest indoor decorated tree exhibit. Don’t forget to vote for your favorite while you are there! In 2021, more than 80 decorated trees were on display, and the Wright County Historical Society expects just as many entries in this year’s Festival of Trees exhibit.

One Division Art

If your family enjoys museums and local art, One Division Art is a must-visit. One Division Art likes to promote local and Midwestern artists, and has anywhere between six and eight different exhibits throughout the year. The museum displays works in all types of mediums, so you never know what or who might be on display at this local museum. Visit the museum’s website for specific details on exhibits and opening dates.
