Small Gaps, Big Impact: Why Space Maintainers Matter for Your Child’s Future Smile

Space maintainers help future smiles.

When a child loses a baby tooth too soon, whether from an accident, decay, or natural causes, it can cause more than a cute gap in their grin. Sure, we think those little gaps are cute, too. But without that tooth in place, the surrounding teeth may drift, creating alignment issues that affect how permanent teeth grow in later.

That’s where space maintainers can be so helpful. These small, yet important dental devices help preserve the proper spacing in your child’s mouth. And that means healthy development, and a stage set for a lifetime of confident, well-aligned smiles.

What is a space maintainer?

If you’re unfamiliar with space maintainers, let us help you get up to speed. A space maintainer is a small dental device designed to hold the space open where a baby tooth has been lost prematurely. This prevents nearby teeth from shifting into that space, allowing the permanent tooth to grow in correctly.

Each space maintainer is custom-made to fit your child’s mouth comfortably and is designed to be easy to wear. There are two main types:

  • Fixed space maintainers: cemented in place and stay put until the permanent tooth begins to erupt.
  • Removable space maintainers: similar to retainers but can be misplaced or forgotten, so fixed types are often recommended for younger children.

Why skipping a space maintainer can create future problems.

We often get asked by parents if a space maintainer is really necessary. And the truth is that you can indeed skip it, but we don’t recommend it. When a baby tooth is lost early, the neighboring teeth naturally start drifting toward the open space. With time, this movement can cause a domino effect that disrupts your child’s bite and the way their permanent teeth come in.

Without a space maintainer, you may see:

  • Crowding or misalignment: Teeth shift into spaces they shouldn’t, making it harder for the adult teeth to make their way in. When teeth are crowded, it’s inevitable that they come in crooked.
  • Need for braces later: Early shifting of teeth often leads to more complex orthodontic treatment down the road. That means more time spent in the dentist’s office, more discomfort for your child, and added costs.
  • Impacted or delayed permanent teeth: When a space closes too soon, new teeth may struggle to make their way in. Even worse, they may grow in crooked (and that’s what we’re trying to avoid).

Skipping a space maintainer can affect not just how your child’s smile looks, but how their teeth function for years to come.

When are space maintainers recommended?

One of the things we talk to parents about often is early interceptive orthodontics. The goal here is to assess your child early enough, typically around age 7, to determine if they could benefit from orthodontics now, or down the road.

Space maintainers are most commonly recommended for children who have lost a baby tooth too soon due to injury, extraction, or decay. They’re generally used between the ages of 6 and 10, when baby teeth are still present and permanent teeth are beginning to develop. By holding space during this transition, space maintainers help promote proper alignment and reduce the need for later correction.

What to Expect During Fitting and Follow-Up

It’s completely normal for parents to have questions and concerns about the process. We get it. Fortunately, having a space maintainer placed is simple and painless. During the appointment, your family dentist will take an impression of your child’s mouth to create a custom-fit device. Once ready, the appliance is gently placed and secured, with no anesthetic or drilling required.

Most kids adjust within a few days, and any mild irritation fades quickly. Caring for a space maintainer is easy: maintain good brushing habits, avoid sticky foods, and attend regular dental check-ins to make sure everything stays in place as your child’s smile develops.

A Small Step for a Healthier Smile

Even though we’re your Buffalo dental clinic, and we’re in the smile business, it always amazes us how something so small can make such a big difference. Space maintainers are simple, effective tools that help protect your child’s smile from future problems, without pain or complicated procedures.

By preserving the natural spacing after a baby tooth is lost too soon, they keep surrounding teeth in their proper position and guide permanent teeth to grow in where they belong. That means fewer alignment issues, less chance of crowding, and a lower likelihood of needing extensive orthodontic work later.
